You’re doing all you can to reduce, reuse, and recycle. You want the best for the health of your family, your community, and your world. Every day, you’re making purchasing decisions based on the environmental impact of the products you buy. Now your kitchen cabinets can be as green as the rest of your life. Kitchen Distributors offers several styles and construction options of cabinetry from environmentally responsible vendors, including low-emitting products, engineered exotic veneers, highly renewable resources and FSC (Forestry Stewardship Counsel) certified hardwood components.
All of Kitchen Distributors’ major cabinet manufacturers are certified members of the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) developed by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA). These manufacturers have demonstrated their commitment to improvements in air quality, product resource management, process resource management, environmental stewardship, and community involvement. Annual reviews are required to ensure continued success in safeguarding the environment and in pursuing new environmentally responsible methods and practices.
In recent years, cabinet manufacturers have begun to address the issues of indoor air quality by offering cabinets with lower emissions. For example, Eco-Friendly® cabinets are made using plywood, particle board or MDF using formaldehyde-free adhesives. In addition, Eco-Friendly® cabinets are finished with water-based stains, paints, and coatings. As a result, their cabinetry emits 0% formaldehyde, 0% VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), and 0% HAPs (Hazardous Air Pollutants). Similarly, cabinets from Elmwood Kitchens are constructed using low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and no formaldehyde added plywood.
Manufacturing cabinets using resources that can be replenished quickly and easily is a greener alternative to using other hardwoods that take longer to grow. For that reason, Elmwood Kitchens and Eco-Friendly® cabinets offer doors made from bamboo plywood or lyptus wood, two highly renewable resources that look great, too. Both manufacturers also offer doors that use engineered veneers to provide the look and feel of exotic wood species like wenge, zebrawood and ebony, while using more abundant wood species and protecting the rarer species of wood.

Finally, both Eco-Friendly® cabinets and Elmwood Kitchens offer cabinetry that can be certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. Furthermore, FSC-certified products, in addition to using renewable resources and low-emitting materials, can help builders and homeowners qualify for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
