In the Beginning...

If you’re thinking about a new kitchen, there are a number of things you can do to get prepared. First, start thinking about a style of kitchen that reflects your own style and the style of your family. Are you conservative and more traditional, or are you more contemporary and modern? Do you like deep, rich colors, or are you more drawn to lighter, natural colors?

In the beginning, you don’t have to have all of the details decided, but you will need to have some general ideas about how you want your kitchen to look. There are so many different options in cabinetry and countertop styles that it can be a bit overwhelming if you walk into a showroom without at least an idea of what best suits you. You can find dozens of resources online at places like HGTV’s website or in the magazines and/or websites of Kitchen and Bath Ideas®, Kitchen & Bath Design News, and Better Homes and Gardens. The big-box home improvement stores have some great books on kitchen and bath design as well.

Again, it’s important to note that at this stage you aren’t necessarily looking to nail down every aspect of your kitchen, but you should be thinking about things like whether you prefer stain or paint, light colors or dark, simple styles or more detailed. As you’re looking for ideas, you may want to keep a notebook or scrapbook with you so you can jot down ideas you see or cut and paste photos of the designs that you like. Gathering as much information about your tastes as possible in the beginning will help you with the details later on.

We’ll keep adding tips and advice to this blog as often as we can, so check back soon for more details on how you can navigate the process toward your dream kitchen and baths.

Once you've got a general idea about the styles of cabinetry and countertops you like, you'll benefit from spending some time thinking about the layout of your kitchen.  There's an old rule of thumb about kitchen design - "the triangle rule" - that says you should have a reasonably small distance between the sink, the fridge, and the range.  These days, though, with cooktops, double wall ovens, warming drawers and microwaves to consider, the triangle issue is more complicated than just three parts.  My point is this, don't get caught thinking that you can't break the triangle rule.

The construction of your cabinets is an important decision in the process of designing your new kitchen or bathroom.  Cabinets are typically made using either plywood or an engineered wood such as MDF, furniture board or particle board.  There are valid arguments for choosing either of these options, and you can find a lot of the arguments by searching online for “plywood or particleboard cabinets.”  The goal of this article is not to convince you that one is better than the other, but rather to present a few of the arguments for and against each of the construction options.
