Don't Let the Economy Keep You from Getting the Look You Want

Anticipation of the New Year always brings new projects into focus, and with the current economic downturn, remodeling is more viable than new construction. Getting a new updated look without breaking the bank should be the goal, and making choices that are environmentally responsible are important. What trends for 2009 should you consider as you plan to remodel your kitchen? What pitfalls should you avoid? As the New Year approaches, now is the time to gather information and plan for your coming project.

First of all, the first months of 2009 are an ideal time to get started with plans. With work slowing down in the present economy, everyone, from architects to contractors, is looking for work. Vendors are offering the best incentives of the year to get you to buy. If purchasing through a big box store, consider their one year no interest offers on credit cards as a way of financing your large purchases. Be sure to pay the balance off in less than a year. A little known fact about these offers is that the interest accrues through the year, and all of it will come back to you if you miss the one year limit.

The big trends for 2009 will be towards cleaner lines and "greener" designs. If you are planning to act on your project this year make a conscious decision to be environmentally friendly with your project. Recycle as much as possible by reusing materials or donating removed cabinets, counter tops, etc. to a local Good Will or other charity. Be sure to get a receipt for your contribution. Your gift will reduce your project cost.

Choose "green" materials including, flooring, cabinets, counter tops, paint, etc. Great flooring choices include bamboo, eucalyptus, and cork. Cork offers the most interesting choice with a variety of colors and styles. These beautiful woods will add much to the look of your kitchen, and they are considered a renewable resource, with about half the growing time of other woods.

Major appliances should have the Energy Star rating. A 15-50% savings on electricity means you will recoup the cost of the appliances over time. The new induction cook tops are an added savings to electricity, and while a bit more expensive than
other conventional gas and electric cook tops, the return on investment make them a viable option.

In the New Year, look for cabinetry that reflects a more modern look, using full overlay doors and European styling. With the increase of condo living and the rehabbing of older buildings as living space, the sleeker look of stainless cabinets will be more in demand. Most cabinet vendors have a sleeker, high gloss product to make your kitchen pop with a retro or modern look.

Recent news stories relating to issues with granite will make quartz products more appealing to health conscience consumers. The danger of staining and bacteria, common issues with granite, will make quartz, with its smooth surface and Microban, more attractive.

Despite the economic slump, prospects for kitchens in 2009 are bright. New options in cabinets, countertops, and appliances will make for exciting design and remodeling projects for the New Year.
